Cyber Monday Fail

Posted at — Nov 28, 2022

WTF and holy crap this has been a very rocky tech month and so much has gone so very wrong.

Some months ago I decided to move from ChromeOS desktop to a Pop_OS (Linux proper) desktop. It worked fine until a recent install or patch caused a number of out of memory errors. I have no idea if that was the cause or just a symptom but since then I have had to use backup machines with fewer installs and updates. And while it’s not that terrible it is nagging me.

Then a few days ago I purchased a DJI gimble only to find out that DJI no longer uses the play store to distribute their software and the justification being governmental interference. True or not I do not install software that is not vetted by the store… I know Apple and Google investigate complaints etc… So that’s getting returned.

I’ve been watching the World Cup on my Hulu app running on a Fire Box from Amazon. Every so often and more times than not the picture freezes. The correction has been described as a reinstall but that’s just wrong. But I did try it and that did not change anything.

Next, in months past I have been trying to connect my ChromeOS device to my work VPN, however, the native ChromeOS VPN support is pretty weak. Partly because my work VPN is not a standard install using properly signed certs but because OpenVPN is not really supported out of the box. (more to come)

Now I’ve purchased an Android tablet with the hopes that I could connect to work and my lab network better and easier or more like the in the good ole days. Unfortunately Android and ChromeOS are nearly the same in this respect. My tablet finally connected to my lap and separately my work VPN but not both at the same time. And it does not support split DNS routing like my laptop/desktop. In order to connect to work I needed to use OpenVPN app and in order to connect to my lab I had to convert the lab to OpenVPN instead of IPSec.

I cannot find a good text editor on Android. The remote ssh looks ok but it weak and clunky.

Anyway as the Cyber Monday continues and tech fails… I keep moving along.
