Strange that HP said that the HP Dev One was a pre-order. It arrived today. Stranger still was the release of a similar/different machine that was likely a windows machine with even more horsepower.

Anyway, box arrived. Nothing too complicated. A nice box inside the usual from HP. Getting into the machine was sinple enough. The power brick was small enough. And very little waste. Phew!

Curiously…

• the laptop would not launch out of the box
• Frist power-on required that it be connected to the wall
• the battery was about 50% charged initially
• the bootstrap/installation was identical to booting from the USB
• updates and upgrades take no longer than they normally do
• pop_os was delivered with rel 22.04 LTS
• always needs a reboot and just those last few questions

First steps after install reboot…

• I like the natural scroll touchpad
• I like 15min display timeout with 30sec screen lock delay
• show battery percentage
• dock intelligent hide
• small icons
• extend dock off

The very last thing…

• update the recovery partition
• I like tiling but I’m not terribly efficient

PRO

• very little waste
• only one sticker on the inside
• nice trackpad and buttons
• keys feel nice
• camera lens door (defaulted open)
• speakers are great
• 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, 1x HDMI, power, headphone, kensington

CON

• weird keyboard layout… few typos already
• one screw does not seem to be installed and the case makes noise
• the power is NOT usb-c

Things I missed…

• trackpad two finger right click defaults to bottom right

NOTE:

I’ve ordered 64GB RAM from Amazon that is supposed to arrive today.
