Reality check - the real cost of cloud computing

Posted at — May 8, 2015

This Chromebook is being advertised for $259. It’s an intel i3 with 4GB RAM and 16GB SSD (according to the post they can be upgraded). What makes this interesting… a single core 3.75GB RAM with zero disk from Google’s Compute Engine costs $33/mo or $396/yr. While it’s not the same classification as a datacenter hardware it might still make a better compute node at your desk or a luggable mobile server rather than putting everything in the cloud. The ROI is clearly less than a year if you compare prices, even with a memory and storage upgrade. The keyboard and mouse are just a bonus.
