This topic and the stark reality of internet security and protection for your/our children is a HUGE topic. At the heart of the problem is that all of these companies pretend to defer to the parents and tell us “if you don’t like it them quit”. But if you have an 12 year old that is emotionally attacked to her purple flyable ridable unicorn and the idea of deleting the account… not to mention all the realbucks you spent on robux…
if you don’t like it then quit
In the last year we have heard about private servers with private rooms where supposed adults were doing virtual bondage or S&M article… Granted the moderators eventially managed the situation. But what else?
Sensible people, children and parents alike, are scared. We hear about people being abducted, killed, sold, slaves, and so on.
I simply makes no sense that the parents cannot see 100% of the conversaions. That there are filters is a joke. That’s what we learned from pig latin and even l33t speak. I’m certain they keey the conversations for law enforcement, advertising, and marketing, maybe even development research. So why not just let the parents have access to the text?
Now there are some other options. Screentime, kidslox, bark.us… 3rd party companies they one needs to engage to MAYBE get the details. Once you turn one feature off they move to another. Spies have been using a shared email account and draft emails as drops for a long time. The same could be said about online google docs. What’s worse is that this evasion is a fulltime job for our kids and a part-time, take out the trash, for the parents. And yet the consequences would be a disaster!
Shortly we need to talk about adiction. Withdrawal. The real cost of privacy. What online rejection does (ask me about the meltdown that happened when TickToc start deleting her accounts for no apprent reason).
Roblox does take parental inquiries but they take a while to respond and they end the same way… quit.
Crickets! Nothing but crickets.
