Synology Goes Wrong

Posted at — Jun 23, 2024

It’s that time of year, when hurricane season starts, and I need to get my disaster plan in place. It’s far from perfect but it’s something. This, unlike previous years, some crazy things are afoot. I cannot seem to log into my NAS systems and mounting shared partitions are also not working.

NAS is from Synology

ssh was returning “Operation not permitted”. After wandering around my networking and various ssh config files I found that I must have changed “PasswordAuthentication yes” to “PasswordAuthentication no” and the client I was trying to log in from was not already in the authorized_keys file. And therefore I wasn not going to be prompted for a password.

This is not a big deal as I’m only trying to configure 3 client systems but I can wait to do that for a while.

The second challenge is that when trying to mount a NAS share I keep getting a “Operation not permitted” response. But let’s start in the beginning. I have other clients with IPs in the same subnet as the NAS. They are perfectly happy mounting the shared filesystem. When I connect my ChromeOS device to the local WiFi network and I try to mount I get this error message. It’s likely because the terminal session is running inside a container in my ChromeOS device and that IP or one of the IPs in the path is not considered approved.

Well I did find out why the operation was not permitted. It turns out that the linux containers are running in userspace and that mounting remote drives is a priviledged operation. Of course I could use SMB and I am… only to realize that I had a dead symlink. Once I fixed all that I was mounting and working just fine.

So my disaster plan is in play and I only need ot decide which systems I plan to use and make sure the batteries are running. I also need to setup and test my VPN devices.

I did have a PS but I do not recall at the moment. So moving on.
